Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama Sargachhi

Dhaanyaganga Krishi Vigyan Kendra

A Krishi Vigyan Kendra under the name Dhaanyaganga Krishi Vigyan Kendra, fully funded by ICAR, Govt. of India, has been established in this Ashrama campus under the umbrella of Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute (RKMVERI) H.Q. Belur Math. The KVK works for successful management of resources in agriculture and allied sectors. This centre extends services to the rural farming community of 13 blocks of Murshidabad district.

AGRICULTURE:

  • Maintenance of 20 traditional rice germplasm, seed production of cereals, pulses, oil seeds, and mass multiplication of newly released seeds.

  • A Dal Mill has been established for the benefit of farmers.

  • Post-harvest production like jam, jelly, pickles, and other processed agriculture-based products are prepared through SHGs.

HORTICULTURE

  • Newly introduced exotic vegetables, cultivation of floricultural crops, scientific crops, medicinal plants arboretum, and vermicompost production are priority activities.

FISHERY

  • Ornamental Fish Breeding: The KVK has an ornamental fish breeding unit. Training is imparted in collaboration with the Fishery Research Institute, Govt. of West Bengal, and the Govt. of India.

  • Inland Fishery: Two ponds have been dug for inland fishery demonstrations.

  • Bio-flock: A bio-flock system has been established to provide training for unemployed youth.

  • Integrated Farming: Some ponds across 13 blocks of the Murshidabad district are used for fish farming alongside livestock and poultry. Faecal matter and other waste are repurposed as fish feed.

BIO-CONTROL LAB.

  • This lab produces Trichoderma viride and other bio-inoculant agents, which are supplied directly to farmers.

SOIL TESTING LAB.

  • Operating under the National Mission of Sustainable Agriculture, this lab analyzes soil samples from 13 blocks of the Murshidabad district. Results are uploaded to a website to generate Soil Health Cards for farmers.

MEDICINAL PLANT ARBORATUM

  • This garden maintains more than 100 species of medicinal plants. Each is grown in a separate plot and labeled with information regarding its identity and medicinal usage.

ANIMAL HUSBANDRY:

  • On-Campus: Training programs for poultry, duck, goat, and sheep breeding. The unit also organizes goat/sheep meat processing and dairy product training.

  • Off-Campus: Focuses on improving breeds of livestock in SC/ST dominated villages to provide alternative means of earning and improve livelihoods. This program has received significant local appreciation.
